2026年9月，韦布空间望远镜公布英仙座IC 348恒星形成区的观测结果，研究人员找到质量低至木星约两倍的褐矮星。该区域距离地球约1000光年，适合研究气体云坍缩时究竟能形成多小的独立天体，也让传统恒星形成模型面临新的检验。

团队先利用近红外相机，根据亮度和颜色筛选候选对象，再用近红外光谱仪进一步分析。此前在同一区域识别出的低质量对象约为木星的三至四倍，这次观测把研究范围推进到更低质量。有一个轻质量对象还显示出周围盘状物质的迹象，提示即使主体本身只有行星量级，也可能存在形成更小伴体的环境。部分光谱中出现尚未明确识别的碳氢分子特征，可能反映这类天体独特的大气性质。褐矮星通常无法像普通恒星那样持续进行氢聚变，因此不能只按外观亮度判断性质。新的数据将帮助研究者重新约束其质量下限和形成条件。
